Importance of Drum Filter in RAS

Drum filter is a crucial component in an Indoor Aquaculture Recirculation System (RAS) for several reasons:

  1. Solid Waste Removal– Drum filters efficiently remove suspended solids (fish feces, uneaten feed, and organic debris) from the water, preventing clogging in downstream components like biofilters and pumps.
  2. Water Clarity Improvement– By capturing fine particles (typically down to 20-60 microns), they maintain clear water, which is essential for fish health and monitoring.
  3. Reduced Biofilter Load– Removing solids before they break down into ammonia reduces the burden on the bio filter, improving overall system efficiency.
  4. Oxygenation & Reduced Fouling– Cleaner water improves oxygen transfer and prevents biofilm buildup in pipes and tanks.
  5. Automation & Efficiency – Modern drum filters are self-cleaning (using backflush or spray bars), reducing labor and maintaining consistent performance.
