Why UV Sterilization is Widely Used in RAS?

UV sterilization is one of the most commonly used disinfection methods in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) due to its effectiveness, safety, and ease of integration.

1. How UV Sterilization Works

UV-C light (254 nm wavelength) penetrates microbes (bacteria, viruses, parasites) and damages their DNA/RNA, preventing reproduction.

Does not alter water chemistry.

Requires pre-filtration (solids can block UV rays).

2. Key Benefits in RAS

✅ Effective Against Pathogens

Kills >99% of bacteria (e.g., Aeromonas, Vibrio), viruses, and parasites (e.g., Ichthyophthirius).
✅ Chemical-Free & Safe for Fish

No toxic residues.
✅ Improves Water Clarity

Reduces floating algae and fine organic particles.
✅ Low Maintenance

Only requires periodic bulb replacement (every 6–12 months).
